Queer Cat Productions is pleased to announce casting for the World Premiere of The Gay Divorce Play by Carson Beker and Nicole Jost with Genevieve Jessee, directed by Nicole Meñez.

ABOUT THE PLAY: The Gay Divorce Play is an interactive theater ritual of a queer marriage dissolution party. TJ (the rational one) and Luz (the woo one) have invited you, their friends, to celebrate their divorce. And you said you would come… Audience members will be called upon to bear witness, take sides, and misbehave. Ultimately, the audience will decide: Should TJ and Luz break up or stay together? Along the way, we will eat, drink, and consider: What is a queer marriage? Is marriage queer? And what does it mean when two people who once loved one another separate, or when a play ends: are we a community of friends, colleagues, and families, or are we just strangers in a room? The Gay Divorce Play is the recipient of a 2018-2019 Innovation in Theater Development Grant from 3Girls Theatre, which will result in a sample 30-minute performance on June 13th, 2019 at the Google Community Space. Queer Cat Productions plans to take the play to full production during the summer of 2019 (July/August, with exact dates TBA).

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES (NON-AEA ONLY): 4 actors (2 cis/trans women,

1 NB/trans/genderqueer, 1 any gender)

TJ, a queer woman. Butch/masc of center. Mid to late 30s. Any race.* “The Rational One.” Probably a Virgo or some equally grounded, detail-oriented sign. Reliable, punctual. Has exactly ten pairs of perfectly matching socks.

LUZ, a queer woman. Mid to late 20s. Any race.* “The Woo One.” Probably an Aquarius or some equally fanciful sign. A hugger. Her shoelaces untie themselves.

OFFICIANT, a nonbinary, trans, or genderqueer person. 30s or older. Any race.* This is not the officiant they hired. This is the substitute officiant that no one expected. Flamboyant. A little too too. Possibly already tipsy. Are they even an, err, official officiant?

BITCHY INNER MONOLOGUE, any gender, any age, any race.* A puppet. The collective (uncharitable?) thoughts of the crowd. A bit twittosphere/social media snark, a bit Dorothy Parker. Will help guide audience members through the interactive parts of the play. Will come to love community.

A NOTE FOR ACTORS OF COLOR: *At least 2 of the 4 characters in The Gay Divorce Play will be played by actors of color. This will include at least 1 of the 2 members of the divorcing couple (meaning that TJ, Luz, or both will be played by actors of color).
